ABOUT KAERU KLOTHING

WHAT IS KAERU KLOTHING?

Essentially and literally, it's clothing centered around a frog named Kaeru. It's hard to expand beyond the frog when everything is named after him. (Does one even desire to go Beyond the Frog?) Oh, yes, Kaeru is the name of the frog guy. He is a little boy, he loves fruit, he does not cuss, he is very nice, he is illiterate, and he loves to be happy. The brand matches his personality: very sweet, nice, and childlike.

I mostly draw all the designs in pencil or pen, but I experiment with all mediums. I spent a while working with clay and physical materials because I fell out of love with two-dimensional stuff, but lately I have been getting into watercolor and charcoal. Someone once told me they loved the designs because of how bad and rudimentary they look. Um, thanks, I tried really hard to make it look good but whatever. Haha.

For some reason, everyone always comments on the shirts when worn in public. I do not know what it is, but waiters and old people love to compliment them. Introverts, take note. Warning, you will be loved on. Get over it!! Love is the greatest thing ever. Nay, it is the only thing ever. It is all we have. Heard!?

ORIGINS

Who can even remember how this started? Looking back, it all seems like nonsense. Wait, actually, I remember it perfectly.

This brand began in 2017, my senior year of high school, when I sat next to a skinny kid with huge glasses. He was funny; even in memory, he still makes me laugh. He’s still alive, as far as I know. The way I’m talking makes it sound like he died, but for me, he exists only in past tense now. That’s just what growing up does.

I won’t talk about his life, but hearing about it pissed me off. His dad crushed his dreams of becoming a clothing designer. I told him I’d make that happen.

Every day I would draw a bunch of concepts, and he would decide what was good and what to throw away. He wanted mascot-based shirts, and it took a million tries, but we finally landed on Kaeru (pronounced "Kay-Ru," even though the Japanese pronunciation is closer to "Kye-Ru"), a little green frog. I bought a heat press and started making shirts based on his design ideas in my garage. In our entire high school clothing career, we sold three shirts, and I was one of them.

Then the kid ran away to live with his mom in another state. The last I heard, his life was going fine, and he didn’t really care about the brand anymore. We drifted apart naturally, as young friends often do across great distances.

So I was left with an "established" brand and a printing machine. I just kept it going, moved to actual manufacturing companies, built the website, and here we are now. Not that much of a leap, but now there are more designs to pick from, which is nice. I guess.

Are these clothes for adults?

First of all, I'm insulted by the question. Second of all, I'm the one who came up with the question...
Third of all, YES!! They're all for everyone! I would never design with children in mind... They're too messy and make me uncomfortable.
